Call for Universal Action to End AIDS

The XVII International AIDS conference is taking place "at a unique moment in the epidemic, when there is widespread consensus on the urgency of ensuring universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support by 2010," according to AIDS 2008 International Co-Chair Dr Pedro Cahn, President of the International AIDS Society.

"Each of us must ask ourselves: What can I do to end AIDS?" he added.

In 2005 world leaders acting through the United Nations committed to the goal of providing universal access to HIV prevention, treatment and care to all who need it by 2010.

The 2008 meeting represents a great opportunity to measure our progress toward this goal but many here, including Oxfam and the singer and Aids activist Annie Lennox  are critical at the slow pace of of progress.
