HIV population in North West grows 9% in 2007
A total of 5,212 people living with HIV are now receiving care at one of the treatment centres across the North West.
HIV prevalence in the North West is now 72 per 100,000 population.
During 2007 a total of 817 people were newly diagnosed HIV positive in the North West; a 10% decrease on the previous year. Figures may rise as reports of late diagnoses are received.
More heterosexuals were newly diagnosed with HIV in the North West in 2007 than any other population. In total, heterosexuals made up 49% of all new cases (compared with 42% gay men). The number of new cases of HIV attributed to injecting drug use, blood or tissue transfer and mother-to-child transmission remains relatively low.
