MEXICO; more evidence of protective effect of male circumcision

In the past few years randomised trials found that circumcision lowers the risk of HIV infection in heterosexual men, but not necessarily in their female sex partners.

At AIDS 2008 one of the three trial groups showed taht the protective effect for circumcised men lasts at least 42 months and may get stronger with time.

Studying men in another of the three randomised trials, researchers showed for the first time that circumcision lowers the risk of Trichomonas infection and high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in sexually active men.

These findings suggest why women with circumcised partners run a lower risk of certain infections besides HIV.

HPV is a critical factor in the development of cervical cancer.
