MEXICO; Sunday 8.30am
The XVII International AIDS Conference (IAC 2008) opens this evening at Centro Banamex in Mexico City -- the first time the conference is being held in Latin America. The meeting is the oldest and largest conference addressing HIV/AIDS. The theme this year is "Universal Action Now". The IAC is focused on social, cultural, economic, and policy issues related to the epidemic, but the meeting will feature numerous sessions each day devoted to biomedical prevention technologies, advances in antiretroviral therapy, and management of side effects and associated conditions. Upwards of 25,000 participants are expected. World leaders scheduled to attend include Mexican President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and former U.S. President Bill Clinton.
