Rapid HIV Testing @ BPNW
One third of people living with HIV still don’t know that they are HIV positive. So they’re not benefiting from HIV treatments, and research shows that they are more likely to transmit HIV than people who know they are HIV positive.
HIV testing has traditionally been carried out in the genitourinary medicine department at hospitals. But high proportions of people turn down an HIV test, despite being happy to test for other sexually transmitted infections.
Getting as many people diagnosed as possible is an important way of trying to stop the HIV epidemic in its tracks. Increasingly HIV testing will be carried out in community settings.
We’ve partnered with MASH (Manchester Action on Street Health) to launch a pilot HIV testing service at our premises. The nurse-led clinic will offer access to a rapid HIV antibody test (results in ONE MINUTE). Our trained counsellors will provide you with pre-test discussion (lasting 20-30 minutes), carry out the one minute test and then discuss the implications of the result with you. And we can fast track you to clinic based services for confirmatory testing should the result be 'reactive'.
