North West continues to be influenced by global AIDS pandemic

Over one third of all HIV positive individuals accessing treatment and care in the North West were infected abroad. In total 5,212 people are accessing HIV care in the North West.

The vast majority (81%) of those exposed abroad were infected via heterosexual sex, while only 14% suspected they were infected in the UK.

Of all the infections acquired abroad, 71% were acquired in sub-Saharan Africa.

Around 9% of people thought they had acquired their infection in Western Europe. More people reported Spain as the source country of their infection than any other Western European country.

HIV exposure abroad has an even greater effect on new HIV diagnoses. In 2007 41% of people diagnosed in the North West reported their infection was acquired abroad.

In total one third of all people who think they acquired their infection abroad were from Zimbabwe. This high proportion of cases reflects both the high HIV prevalence and political situation in Zimbabwe.

A new report HIV & AIDS in the North West of England 2007 can be read online here.
