The Project is a child-centred service supporting children and young people (up to the age of 18) and their families living with and or affected by HIV.
The projects aims to provide the following services:
**Individual support to children and young people.
Giving children the opportunity to talk about and explore their feelings and understandings of HIV and its impact on their lives. Providing children with 'time-out' and a break from their 'caring' role.
**Group Work
With young people aged 10-18 years aimed at building peer support networks. This service currently provides two groups (10-14 years and 10-18 years) in response to the age, understanding and presenting needs of the children.
**Parental support
Working with parents and carers to explore the impact HIV has upon them and their family. Issues may include how to share information about their illness with their children, support in planning for the future and in recording their family life, history and memories. Ensuring families are linked into local support networks including Sure Start, health and education services. Advocacy in relation to housing, benefits, domestic violence issues etc. Support is offered on an outreach/ home visiting basis as well as centre based appointments and parent groups.
**Befriending Service
Children are linked with a Befriender who will support them in accessing activities. This will provide children and their families with support that promotes self-esteem, provides social opportunities for the children and a break for both the child and the parent.
**Crèche and childcare support
Including holiday play activities to enable parents and carers to access groups, attend appointments as well as having fun days out.
Referrals will be considered for families living outside the catchment area. Barnado's is committed to trying to respond positively to unmet need and as an agency, we will attempt to secure funding to enable service provision.juliet.ramage@barnardos.org.uk
