See the BPNW sand mandala

Mandala_1The Body Positive North West sand mandala was created on the weekend of 30th and 31st August 2008. It was made in the traditional way using sand (most of which was hand coloured especially). The tools we used were Chakpurs –  brass funnels through which the coloured sand is poured and painstakingly directed onto the board. The board, painted black, was constructed by Alvin, and formed the basis on which the mandala arose.

At the heart of the mandala is the red ribbon. Before starting the mandala, some members placed their medication at the centre.
The group contemplated their own individual healing and we then set the big intention - that all beings be healed.

Slowly, the mandala took shape, based on earlier guided imagery andMandala_2 meditation. At various points its shape developed as new contemplations emerged. At one point it was felt that all spiritual traditions be symbolically represented. The Fish, the Om, the Yin Yang symbol and Star were added.
Traditionally most sand mandalas are destroyed shortly after their completion. This is done as a metaphor of the impermanence of life. The sands are swept up and placed in an urn; to fulfil the function of healing, half is distributed to the audience at the closing ceremony, while the remainder is carried to a nearby body of water, where it is deposited. The waters then carry the healing blessing to the ocean, and from there it spreads throughout the world for planetary healing.
Our sand mandala will be on display and then dismantled in the traditional way.

Since April, 2008 the Mandala Project has been meeting and creating mandalas for healing. Anyone is welcome to attend the weekend workshops.
